The
Smithy
We
understand that the Smithy was built in the 1700's and functioned
as a Smithy until around 1940 when it was bought by James
Holmes, a plumber, for just £8. Since then the Smithy
has been host to antiques and an adjoining workshop was added
in the 1980's. Finally it was made into a lunch and evening
restaurant establishment with the Smithy building itself being
used for bed and breakfast. In 1999 it became a tea room and
gift shop and in March 2006 Chris and Jean Berry acquired
the property, which boasts a delightful courtyard setting,
overlooking the pretty waterfall burn.
The
Tea Room
The Smithy specialises in home cooked food and using fresh
local produce. Our home baking includes a variety of homemade
cakes, tray bakes with fruit, plain and cheese scones made
fresh daily, homemade soups with a difference (i.e., roasted
red pepper with sweet potato, smoked haddock froth etc).
For
people who would like a light lunch, then there are a selection
of light snacks ranging from sandwiches, toasties, jacket
potatoes, and paninis all with a variety of fillings, but
if you would like a more substantial meal, then we have full
salads made with local pates, our own home cooked meats (ham
in a mustard and honey marmalade glaze or silverside of Scottish
beef) omelettes, a Scottish cheese selection platter, and
locally produced smoked salmon are always available.
We
also offer a variety of vegetarian snacks and meals plus some
home cooked daily specials to satisfy the hungry traveller,
possibly followed by home cooked apple pie and Galloway ice
cream.
We
also provide a wide choice of teas and Italian espresso coffee
(or you could treat yourself to the rather delicious Italian
hot chocolate deluxe, a meal in itself!), together with a
range of soft drinks, wines and beers (alcohol can only be
served with food).
Gift
Shop & Information Point
The
Smithy also offers a wide range of locally produced crafts
and gifts and a large selection of Galloway preserves and
biscuits plus a selection of local postcards and books, as
well as being the local tourist information centre, well stocked
with local Tourist Information, OS maps, covering all of these
outdoor activities for the Glenkens area plus general information
about other tourist attractions such as botanical gardens,
castles, and details of a whole range of craftsmen working
within the Glenkens and Galloway area.
