Fishing
There a various trout lochs in the area all within 30 mins drive to offer a varied choice of venue offering some exciting sport.
Pike fishing is renowned in Galloway especially on Loch Ken which is the venue for many course fishing competitions over the year. Loch Ken is some 11 miles long and tickets are available from various sources.

Cycling
It is often remarked upon by visitors how quiet our roads are and how appealing they are to cycling. Endless country roads with stunning views of the countryside and wildlife provide an excellent opportunity to get on your bike and explore the area.

Golf
Scotland is generally known as the home of golf and Southern Scotland offers some challenging courses. With a mixture of fun and serious courses, coastal winds can add to the demands of the game. The Smithy currently sponsors a hole on the New Galloway golf course.

Walking
The Smithy is ideally situated to enjoy an abundance of walking from local riverside walks and village strolls to Scotland's 212 coast to coast long distance route, the Southern Upland Way. So after a stroll down the river bank or tackling an 18 mile section of the Southern Upland Way The Smithy is the ideal location to take a break.

Bird Watching
For years bird watchers have visited the area to experience many species of birds from wild geese to birds of prey. The Galloway Red Kite Trail is extremely popular with many visitors where these fantastic birds can be seen throughout the area plus at close quarters at the feed station at Laurieston.

Game Shooting – Scotland and in particular Galloway is renowned for its country sports and many shooters visit the area throughout the season. Pheasant and Partridge shooting as well as duck and geese and the abundance of rabbits make this a popular area from visitors from all over the world.
